About the Conference

Asia has been thought to be a region not only of robustness and continuity but also of diversity and contrast. While there are those who claim that the region may share long-standing cultural and social traditions, it is definitely also characterized by differences and divides. Yet so important is Asia to the rest of the world that the 21st century has been dubbed the Asian century. Has Asia become the powerhouse that it was anticipated to be? How can the rise of Asia in the late 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s be described and explained? What challenges are likely to face the peoples of the region in the coming decades? Are its sub-regions anywhere near to attaining some measure of effective integration? What prospects can be anticipated in the coming decades? What role do the major powers play in shaping the way that Asia faces its challenges?

In some ways the Philippines has become a microcosm of Asia. It has a burgeoning population that is always on the move. Cultural differences are strongly evident and deeply embedded enough to cause a degree of violent conflict and political turmoil. Like the continent to which it belongs, western merchandize, norms, and values influence (if not permeate) Philippine society; and yet it continues to manifest its own unique way of adapting to such influences. What can the Philippines and other developing political systems learn from the Asian experience? How should specific developing countries like the Philippines attempt to unravel the ‘secrets’ of Asia’s successes and challenges?

Co-organized with the University of the Philippines Visayas, the 2014 International Conference of the Philippine Political Science Association (PPSA) will explore and interrogate how the Philippines looks upon Asia. It will attempt to examine the lessons that can be learned in terms of how Asia has managed to overcome the challenges facing it and the rest of the world such as economic crises, terrorism, democracy and human rights, among others.  The 2014 PPSA International Conference intends to showcase different perspectives in the way that Asia is depicted effectively determining how the region is ‘mirrored’ by itself. The Conference also provides a venue in which to reflect on the previous and present contributions of the discipline as stepping stones in charting new directions in the field of political science. More importantly, it aims to promote a developing country perspective of a region as vast and as complex as Asia. Scholars, activists, and other public intellectuals from the Philippines, Asia, and elsewhere are encouraged to participate.

About the PPSA

The Philippine Political Science Association (PPSA) continues to observe more than 50 years of path breaking contributions to the promotion of the study of politics through the professional development of its members and academic advances made in teaching, research, and publications. The PPSA, through its activities in general and its annual conferences in particular, has continuously and critically engaged fellow academics (not only in political science but also in the other social science disciplines), policy-makers, non-governmental organizations (NGO), and social movement players as well as public intellectuals on topics touching on day-to-day political realities at the local, regional and international arenas.

A key strength of the PPSA is that it is multidisciplinary in its approaches as well as in its engagements. Thus, its members do not only include political scientists, but also sociologists, historians, and economists, among others. As with the previous PPSA conferences, the 2014 PPSA International Conference foresees the participation of around 150 academics, researchers, and public intellectuals as well as well-known policy and opinion makers and social movement and civil society players on 10-11 April 2014 in Iloilo City with UP Visayas as its local partner.
